The Port of Seattle announced plans to open a cruise ship terminal on Pier 46, immediately adjacent to Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square district. This terminal will be permitted for mega-ships (5,000+ passengers) from April to October each year, starting in 2023. It will be Seattle’s fourth cruise ship berth.
Waterfront communities all over the world—Charleston, Venice, Barcelona, Dubrovnik, Dublin, Galapagos, and more—are fighting the expansion of cruises due to the damage caused by this form of tourism, including:
⭐ Toxic air quality linked to cancer
⭐ Damage to marine ecosystems
⭐ Displacing small, locally owned businesses
⭐ Gridlocked traffic
⭐ The “overtourism” effect
⭐ Environmental crisis
The Port of Seattle plans to begin cruise ship operations at Pier 46 in 2023, however, the community has options for stopping or significantly minimizing the impacts of this project.
Right the Ship Seattle is a grassroots group of neighbors and business owners organizing the Pioneer Square community and Seattle at large in opposition to the Port’s new cruise ship expansion plans. Our mission is to champion a common sense, greener alternative to the planned cruise ship expansion in Seattle.
⭐ A ban on massively polluting practices, including use of heavy bunker fuel linked to cancer and asthma, and dumping waste into our waters.
⭐ Enlightened economic development policies that support tourism while strengthening Pioneer Square as a healthy and vibrant historic neighborhood where local residents, workers, and small businesses are prioritized.
Right the Ship Seattle will clarify its strategy for pursuing these goals after the Port releases its Environmental Impact Study (EIS) in the second quarter of 2020. Until then, it is critical to raise as much awareness about this project and its potential impact. Please sign up for updates, follow us on Instagram, and share this information with others.
